WHY MEDIATE?

A Japanese Scientist by the name of Dr.Masaru Emoto conducted a really interesting experiment on water and the effect that different words have on it. The idea was to observe the crystals of frozen water after putting different words in front of it, playing music and praying to it.

The result was that the water crystals always looked beautiful with positive words, pleasant music and pure prayer. Interestingly, when the words, music and prayer were negative, the crystals would look disfigured.

Here are some of the photos from Dr. Masaru Emoto’s experiment:

Seeing this was a huge eye-opener for me. It made me think of what effect words would have on our own bodies, especially when considering that we are made up of about 60-70% water.

Our inner dialogue and thoughts have a huge effect on our health and wellbeing. Emotions like fear, anger, humiliation, and sadness block our energy centres, which means that our bodies do not receive an adequate flow of electricity/energy to certain organs. When this happens, we experience physical discomfort such as headaches, heart palpitations, tension etc. This is our body trying to tell us that there is a blockage somewhere.

The goal of meditation is pure awareness. With this awareness, it becomes possible to free ourselves from the bounds of our ego, judgements, opinions and desires. These are the things that make us reactive and lead to experiences of fear, anger, humiliation and sadness.

But to sit still enough to reach this level of self-inquiry, takes practice and patience. Meditating sporadically can still provide benefits like relaxation and better mental clarity, but its true purpose cannot be experienced unless done consistently over a long period of time.

Basically, there are two types of meditation practices:

  1. Outer practices – these are done to prime the mind and body for stillness e.g. visualisation, mantra, pranayama (which are breathing techniques)

  2. Inner practice – there is only one type of inner practice, and that is sitting in pure awareness

In our upcoming workshop here at BIM, I will be sharing some knowledge around both types of practices, and most importantly, help you to develop a consistent and insightful meditation practice.

The workshop will run over 3 weeks for an hour each session and will cover the following:

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Finding the right posture so that you can sit still and comfortably during meditation

  • Various breathing techniques for relaxing the body and mind

  • A simple counting meditation for increased patience and concentration

  • An energy centre opening meditation to experience more balance, flow and energy

  • A heart opening meditation for improving relationships with yourself and others

  • Simple and practical techniques to reduce stress and think clearly

  • Walking beach meditation and breakfast at Bondi markets (Saturday morning)
